The World Set Free is the twelfth episode of the American documentary television show " Space: Space and Time ." The premiere took place on June 1, 2014 on Fox , and on June 2, 2014 on the National Geographic Channel . The episode was directed by Brannon Braga , the script was written by Ann Druyan and Stephen Soter . The plot of this episode focuses on the phenomenon of the greenhouse effect (discovered by Jean Baptiste Fourier and Svante Arrhenius ), its causes, and evidence of the existence of global warming that arose under the influence of various types of human activities. Tyson also describes the planet Venus, as a good example of the greenhouse effect, and the possible use of alternative energy sources to avoid this [2] [3] . The title of the episode refers to Herbert Wells' novel, The Liberated World "(1914), in which the writer predicted the emergence of nuclear weapons, a global war with their use, and later, when the destructive power of weapons forced the world to awaken, people in his novel turned to the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Story
At the center of the episode is a study of global warming and an explanation of the causes of the greenhouse effect. Tyson selects the vast history of the planet Venus as a good example; according to a number of studies of Venus , once it was very similar to the Earth - it had oceans and continents, as well as an oxygen atmosphere - but the increased volcanic activity caused a significant increase in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as a result of which Venus was covered with a dense layer of clouds, the temperature on the planet rose, and the oceans boiled away.
After that, Tyson talks about the fact that the properties of carbon dioxide are such that an increase in its concentration in the atmosphere will cause climate change , and it has been officially proved that since the beginning of the 20th century, its level in the atmosphere has been steadily increasing. Despite objections, it was also proved with the unique isotope signature of this carbon dioxide that the increase was not caused by natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions, but by the use of oil , coal and natural gas as fuel. As a result, the average temperature on Earth rose, which caused positive feedback and the melting of polar glaciers .
Tyson then discusses alternative fuel sources. So, he talks about the solar generator invented by Auguste Musho in the XIX century, and the solar-steam generator Frank Schumann ; due to the cheapness and ease of use of coal and oil, these inventions did not find wide application, remaining for a long time “unusual toys”. Today, solar and wind power stations can be found in many parts of the world, and the receipt of energy from them can provide humanity for a long time. In the end, Tyson compares the complexity of switching to clean energy sources with the efforts that were made during the Space Race , and concludes that it is not too late for humanity to change course.
