The episode explores the paleogeography of the Earth for millions of years and the impact of a different location of the continents on life on the planet. the story begins with a period of heavy bombardment, "from 3.8 to 4.1 million years ago, when the Moon, Mercury, Venus and the Earth were under a hail of space debris" [3] . Tyson also explores the past of the planet, arguing that “the past of the Earth is a different planet”, hinting at how plate tectonics formed the modern planet Earth [4] . Story
The story begins with Tyson's account of the appearance of the first trees 300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period . These trees were rich in lignin and therefore were inedible for microorganisms. As a result, when the trees died, they did not rot, but gradually turned into coal. About 50 million years later, at the end of the Permian era , volcanic activity burned this coal, releasing carbon dioxide and toxic substances into the atmosphere and suddenly creating a greenhouse effect , due to which the temperature in the ocean rose and methane rose from the bottom and also ended up in the atmosphere. This catastrophe became known as the Permian mass extinction , during which more than 90% of all species died.
Tyson talks about tectonic plates that form the earth's crust. He also gives hypotheses that have been put forward by various scholars of the past - the hypothesis of Abraham Ortelius that the continents were once connected, the hypothesis of Alfred Wegener about a single continent called Pangea and the continental drift , put forward contrary to the prevailing opinion about the flooded isthmuses between the continents; the hypothesis of Bruce K. Hizen and Marie Tharp , who discovered the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on the bottom of the ocean, which confirmed the theory of continental drift. Tyson describes how the earth’s crust lies on the mantle , which is constantly moving due to the high temperature and rotation of the outer and inner core of the Earth.
Then Tyson talks about the consequences of the asteroid’s fall and about the Mel-Paleogene extinction , which left mammals dominating the Earth. After the story goes on to the topic of later geological events - the formation of the Mediterranean Sea due to the destruction of the natural dam in the area of the modern Strait of Gibraltar , as well as the Isthmus of Panama , the formation of which blocked the flow from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, causing large-scale climate change, such as the conversion of lush African fields in arid plains and the effect on the appearance of mammals climbing trees. Tyson also explains that various planets had a negligible effect on the speed of rotation of the Earth and the inclination of the earth's axis , which periodically caused ice ages , and also affected the nomadic life of the first people. The episode ends with Tyson explaining the fact that the geography of the Earth may change again in the future, and this is expected to cause another mass extinction.
