Biography

Born in the village of Timonino, Yaroslavl Province (rural settlement Red Profintern) in 1907.

Created in the 20s - 30s. It was widely known. He fell into disgrace and was repressed.
Alexander Andreevich went to the front in July 1941. He died in September 1942.

Creativity

Theater critics, literary critics, and even fellow writers predicted a great future for him: for example, Maxim Gorky called Kopkov (along with Isaac Babel ) “one of the most prominent figures of Soviet literature and dramaturgy.” But, nevertheless, in 1940, Kopkov was recognized as an anti-Soviet element by the decree of the party, and his works were included in the list of banned [1] .

As a playwright, Kopkov wrote only two plays (he just didn’t have time anymore): Elephant (1932) and Tsar Potap

“Elephant” was periodically staged, so for the first time, it was staged at the Perm State Drama Theater in 1978. Director of the play B.A. Filippov, artist A.L. Perch. "Tsar Potap" in Soviet times almost never went anywhere. And it was

not only because of the aforementioned "party" ban. For the first time this play was accepted for staging in 1938 at the Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater , which was then directed three times by the USSR State Prize laureate, the famous actor Boris Babochkin . The first Potap Urlov was Vitaliy Policeitsimako, and Pavel was played by People's Artist of the USSR Efim Kopelyan . The actor recalled that his dream was the role of Potap, but ... the play was banned. Babochkin was forced to remove the play from the repertoire, because his directors were threatened by Stalinist camps. But Babochkin himself was saved only by the fact that he had already played Vasily Ivanovich Chapaev in the cinema. But he still lost the post of artistic director of the BDT for this performance.

Under Khrushchev (the “Khrushchev thaw”), the ban on the production of “Tsar Potap” was lifted - but even then theaters were afraid to include the play in its repertoire, since its content was “dual”.

And only relatively recently, “Tsar Potap” began to be staged in the theaters of the post-Soviet space. As critics say,

among them only the productions of “Potap Urlov” of the Odessa Youth Theater and “Farmers” of the State Don Cossack Theater can be called successful.
