Game career
He began his hockey career in his native Sweden. Being a player of the Djurgarden IF , he was selected at the 1986 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings club, but first appeared on the ice of the National Hockey League only in the 1990/91 season . The main achievements of Johan as a national team player belong to the same period: in 1990 he took silver, and in 1991 and 1992 the gold of the world hockey championship . In the 1993/94 season , already a San Jose Sharks player, he composed an attacking trio with Sergei Makarov and Igor Larionov . In March 1995, Garpenlev moved to the Florida Panthers club, where in his only full-fledged regular season 1995/96 he set a personal record for abandoned goals - 23. Then the Swede was more than ever close to winning the Stanley Cup , but his team lost in the final Colorado Avalanche series. The next three seasons of Johan were tormented by injuries, and he failed to reach the previous level of performance. In 1999, in the NHL expansion draft, he became one of 26 hockey players who joined the Atlanta Thrashers club. At the end of the season, Harpenlev returned to Sweden, where he completed his professional career as a player.
Coaching career
From 2002 to 2005, Garpenlev was an assistant to the head coach at Djurgarden. He was also an assistant to the head coach of the Sweden national team at the 2004 World Cup. From 2008 to 2010, Garpenlev worked as a scout at the Dallas Stars . At the world championships 2011 and 2012, Harpenlev was the manager of the Swedish national team.
