Biography
The only work of the Master known to us is the large altar polyptych made in 1506 from the old church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (later it was built into the Old Castle fortress) in the city of Selmecbánya, one of the richest mining cities of Upper Hungary at the beginning of the 16th century (now Banska Štiavnica , Slovakia ). It was previously believed that the altar was in the church of St. Catherine.
The historians of German and Hungarian art have repeatedly tried to determine the name of the artist hiding under this monogram. Three versions are currently the most popular:
- Jörg Breu Sr. (c. 1475/1480, Augsburg - 1537) - artist and engraver , representative of the Danube School of Painting . The influence of the Danube School is noticeable in the works of MS
- Master MZ [1] . At present, it is generally accepted that Matthäus Zaisinger [2] (1478–1555), a German engraver, goldsmith and draftsman from Munich , who preserved 22 etchings and 3 drawings (kept in museums in Berlin , Nuremberg and Munich). In these works, Italian influence is noticeable, he lived for some time in Italy (in 1500 , in the Holy Year, made a pilgrimage to Rome ). This artist, although he knew and used the graphic works of the young Dürer, was older than him and was probably born in 1450 . His etchings were made after a trip to Rome. Altar panels in Selmecbánya in this case are his later and main works [3] [4]
- Hungarian artist Sebastian ( Hungarian. Sebestyén ), mentioned in the city documents Selmecbánya under 1507 .
Style
The work of the Master combines drama, colorfulness, decorativeness, depth, resembles the works of Albrecht Durer , the Danube School and Matthias Grunewald . It also inherits some traditions of the Flemish painters of the late 15th century .
Artwork
The only work of the Master known to us is the altarpiece polytype of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Banska Stiavnica, completed in 1506. Only seven of the eight original altar panels have survived; they are currently in different collections. The upper row of the altar consisted of four images of joyful events in the life of Jesus:
- "Annunciation" , it is currently lost
- “Meeting Mary with Elizabeth”, currently at the Museum of Fine Arts , Budapest
- "Nativity of Christ" , located in the church of St. Anthony (Szentantal village in Central Slovakia)
- “Adoration of the Magi” , located in the Palace of Fine Arts of Lille (from the end of the 19th century ), France
The bottom row of the altar consists of four episodes of the Passion of Christ , all of which are in the Christian Museum, Esztergom :
- "Christ on Mount of Olives "
- "Carrying the Cross"
- Crucifixion
- "Resurrection"
The MS master probably also took part in the work on the sculptures that were part of the altar. Some of these sculptures are preserved, but the degree of participation of the artist in their creation is unknown.
