The early years

Jacques Webster was born April 30, 1991 in the city of Missouri, a suburb of Houston . Scott lived with his grandmother, while his mother worked at Apple , and his father went about his own business. Scott attended classes at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at San Antonio . [2]

Musical career

In 2012, Scott signed a double contract with record companies Epic Records and GOOD Music . In the spring of 2013 he publishes his debut mixtape Owl Pharaoh , and in the fall of next year Days Before Rodeo . In the fall of 2015, the artist's debut studio album, Rodeo , was released, which subsequently received RIAA platinum certification . The album was attended by such artists as Kanye West , Justin Bieber , The Weeknd , Young Thug , Chief Keef and others.

In the fall of 2016, Scott released his second studio album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight , which was positively received by music critics. [3] [4] The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart , selling 53,000 digital copies in its first week of sales. [5] The album includes guest couplets from artists such as André 3000, Kendrick Lamar , Kid Cudi , Quavo and others.

☎: Career start

At the age of 16, Travis began making beats , subsequently starting a collaboration with his longtime friend Chris Holloway. In 2008, they released their first mini-album on Myspace . In 2010, Travis formed a duet with rapper OG Chess, proclaiming himself The Classmates. The Classmates released two full-fledged projects: Buddy Rich and Cruis'n USA ; Travis produced both projects. In 2011, after personal disagreements and financial disputes, the duet The Classmates ceases to exist. After graduating from college, Scott moves from Houston to Los Angeles. In California, Travis was assisted by his friend Mike Waxx, who owned the hip-hop portal Illroots. Then the rapper TI heard one of Travis's tracks - Lights (Love Sick) , after which he called Scott and asked him to come to the rapper at the studio. At the TI studio, he wrote a verse and put Travis Animal on an already completed track. [6]

2012–2014: Owl Pharaoh and Days Before Rodeo

Scott's debut mixtape Owl Pharaoh was originally due in mid-2012. For technical reasons, the mixtape was delayed, but Travis assured that the project will be released at the end of 2012. [7] With the help of Kanye West, Mike Dean and several other producers, the mixtape was ready. But the project release dates have changed again. This time, problems arose with the design of the cover. Scott then released two singles: Blocka La Flame and Quintana ; the second single was accompanied by a music video clip. March 27, 2013 Travis was included in the annual list of the most notable rap beginners of the year according to XXL magazine. [8] March 29, after an interview with British DJ DJ Semtex , Travis presented a fragment of his next single, Upper Echelon , recorded with rappers TI and 2 Chainz . [9] On April 2, 2013, Scott announced that his debut mixtape Owl Pharaoh would be available on the iTunes Store on May 21, 2013. Mixtape was released for free.

On March 13, 2014, at the annual South by Southwest Festival, Scott and Big Sean performed a new track, which was supposedly to be called 1975 and was released on Scott's first studio album. [10] Later, the rapper denied that the single had a title of 1975 , but confirmed that the song would be included in the second mixtape, Days Before Rodeo . [11] On May 5, 2014, the full version of the new single, called Don't Play , was recorded on the official page of the rapper on SoundCloud , recorded together with Big Sean and the British indie rock band The 1975 . [12] On Twitter, Scott announced his first tour, The Rodeo , which will also feature rapper Young Thug and producer Metro Boomin . The Rodeo Tour included major cities such as Denver , Houston , Chicago , Detroit , New York , Atlanta , Philadelphia , San Diego , Los Angeles , San Francisco and Seattle . As invited guests in different cities, such artists as Kanye West , Chris Brown , Wale and Birdman performed in support of Scott. [13] [14] For Travis' insane manner of conducting concerts, The Rodeo Tour has been nicknamed one of the “wildest rap tours in history . ” [15]

2015–2016: Rodeo and Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight

Travis Scott's first studio album, Rodeo, was released on September 4, 2015. As guests, the album was attended by artists such as Migos , Juicy J , Kanye West, The Weeknd, Rae Sremmurd , Chief Keef, Justin Bieber, Young Thug and Toro y Moi . The producers of the album were Mike Dean, Kanye West, Metro Boomin, Travis himself and many others. The album was supported by two singles: 3500 with Future and 2 Chainz, and Antidote . The latter became his most successful single, ranking 16th on the Billboard Hot 100 . Rodeo received positive reviews from critics, and also finished third in the Billboard 200 and first in the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart . [sixteen]

On February 8, 2016, it was announced that Travis would become part of WANGSQUAD , a campaign by American designer Alexander Wang . [17] In mid-August, Scott announced that a second studio album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight , would soon be released. [18] In a May interview with Billboard magazine, Travis explained the title of the album: “My next album,“ Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight ”is mostly about all my friends and those who grow up here (in Missouri), I'm not saying it's a ghetto , we don’t live in bloody programs , but we are in a social trap. This is a social trap that does not allow us to express ourselves ... " . After many delays of the album on Twitter, project producer Mike Dean announced that the album would not be released in August, as originally planned, but in early September, as he had not yet completed work on the technical stage of the project. [19] After tiring album delays, September 2, especially for Apple Music, Travis released his second studio album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight , in which Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, Andre 3000 and many others appeared as guests of the album. [20] The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 charts. [21] On September 12 of the same year, General Music Publishing Group CEO, Jody Gerson, announced the signing of a contract with Scott. [22] On December 5, Complex magazine, summing up the results of the year, published a list of 50 Best Albums of 2016 ( “The 50 Best Albums of 2016” ), in which Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight placed in 5th place, noting that Kanye’s influence on Travis is noticeable , since West is the only one who could coordinate so many “kitchen chefs” to ensure a uniform, seamless and smooth sound sequence. [23]

2017 - Present

On January 27, the second studio album of the hip-hop group Migos called Culture was released , in which Travis appeared with a guest couplet on the track “Kelly Price”. [24] On the day of the album's release, through Instagram, he announced the launch of his new clothing line with the support of the Australian fashion brand Helmut Lang. [25] Later, Scott was spotted working on a studio together with another hip-hop artist, Nav. [26] From early February to late June, the artist will arrive on a tour. [27] On March 2, 2017, Travis, along with Quavo and Lil Uzi Vert, released a music video for the song “Go Off”, which became one of the musical themes for the movie “ Fast and the Furious 8 ”. [28] In an interview with Numero magazine, Travis said he was planning on launching his own label with the name Cactus Jack Records: “I have no intention of creating a label to control my finances. First of all, I want to help other artists, discover new names, give them a chance. I want to give them what they once gave me, but to do it even better. " [29] On March 5, Scott published the name of his new tour, Birds Eye View . [30] On April 3, specially for Apple Music, Travis released a music video for the track "Goosebumps", which also contains a verse from Kendrick Lamar. [31] In early July, until early August, Travis stayed on Kendrick Lamar's tour. [32]

On May 17, 2016, Scott announced that his third studio album would be called Astroworld. [33] [34]

On December 21, 2017, a joint album was released with Quavo from Migos titled Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho . The album cover artist was Ralph Steadman. On August 3, 2018, Travis's third studio album, Astroworld , was released.

Musical style and influences

American music magazine Spin described the artist’s debut mixtape, Owl Pharaoh , as akin to Kid Cudi’s second studio album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager . Scott also called Kanye West, Lil Wayne , Bon Iver and Kid Cadi the ones who had the greatest influence on his work. [35] [36] In the spring of 2013, in an interview with TheDrop.fm, he stated that he usually records his tracks in the dark. [37]

In the summer of 2013, in an interview with MTV , Scott said that he draws inspiration from “quality music”, like Kendrick Lamar’s album, good kid, mAAd city , or Acid Rap mixtape of Chicago hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper . Talking about his music career, Scott said: “Dude, I'm not hip-hop. Maybe I'm an MC or a rapper, but my work process always goes differently. ” In addition, he noted the influence of Kanye West's work, namely the 808s & Heartbreak album: “I missed College Dropout and Late Registration to listen to the 808s & Heartbreak right away” [West's fourth studio album, which is full of abundant singing, auto tuning and distorted electronic beats]. He also called the indie-folk band Bon Iver one of his favorite bands: “I'm where Justin Vernon [de facto leader of Bon Iver] is. I love this type of music, and I want, I could do it all the time. I do not like any categories. I’m an artist, I’m a producer, I’m a director - all this is reflected in my music. ” [38]

Kid Cadi is one of Scott's most beloved artists; the latter publicly stated that he was ready to go on a joint tour with Kadi for free. [39] In the spring of 2015, Scott said that he could hardly restrain his emotions when he first saw Kid Kadi: “Once he [Kadi] suddenly appeared in the studio, where I and A-Trak were working on new material. Kadi took me to his car with him to ride and show me his new tracks. It was one of those emotional moments when I wanted to cry. " [40]
