Gamlin (Hamlin) Garland ( Eng. Hannibal Hamlin Garland ; 1860 - 1940 ) - American novelist, poet and essayist. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize of 1922.

Pulitzer Prize for biography or autobiography

Known for his work on farmers in the Midwestern United States. [1] The author of the trilogy about life in the Midwest - “The Son of the Midwest” - “ A Son of the Middle Border ”, 1917; “Daughter of the Midwest” - “ A Daughter of the Middle Border ”, 1921; “Scouts from the Midwest” - “ Back-trailers from the Middle Border ”, 1928. Interestingly, Garland was the author of the name of the art group from Indiana - Hoosier Group . [2]

Gamlin Garland House

Born September 14, 1860 on a farm near West Salem , Wisconsin. He was the second of four children by Richard Garland and Charlotte Isabelle McClintock and named after Hannibal Gamlin , American politician and vice president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln .

Throughout his youth, he lived on various farms in the Midwest, until in 1884 he settled in Boston , Massachusetts , where he began his writing career. Spent a lot of time at the Boston Public Library , reading through the works of Henry George . Influenced by some of his novels, in 1898, Garland traveled to Yukon to personally witness the Gold Rush , which inspired gold and adventure seekers. He lived in Iowa - from Osage to St. Ansgar . Many of his works were based on what he saw there. Returning to Illinois , he married Zulime Taft [3] , the sister of the sculptor Lorado Taft , and began working as a teacher and lecturer. He wrote novels, short stories and essays. In 1917 he published an autobiography of A Son of the Middle Border , which was a success. In 1922 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Gamlin Garland became a fairly famous writer during his lifetime, had many friends in literary circles. In 1918, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Literature .

After moving to Hollywood, California in 1929, he devoted the remaining years of his life to the study of mental phenomena and parapsychology, which he began back in 1891.

Died March 4, 1940 in Hollywood, California. He was buried at home in the Neshonoc Cemetery cemetery . [4] Had two children:

  • Mary Isabel Garland Lord (1903-1988,
  • Constance Garland Doyle (1907-1988).

His in West Salem is on the US National Register of Historic Places .
