Story

The story is told first - hand by prisoners at San Quentin Prison (professor of agronomy Darrell Standing) sentenced to death . For a long time, Darrell stayed in solitary confinement , where he was repeatedly tortured by the so-called straitjacket - a piece of tarpaulin tightly tightening the whole body according to the principle of lacing, causing angina pectoris .

Trying to alleviate the torment experienced, Standing tries the method of "small death" (a kind of trance state), prompted to him by other prisoners by tapping. As a result, he travels among the stars, and then experiences the experience of many of his past incarnations. Describing journeys through your past lives is the bulk of the book.

Background

The Straitjacket was really used in San Quentin at the time; her descriptions of Jack London were based on an interview with former convict Ed Morrell, whose name was also used for the minor character of the novel. Morrel spent 14 years in California prisons (1894-1908) for participating in gangs robbing the railways of the South Pacific Company in the 1890s, five of them in solitary confinement. London sought his pardon. After his release, Morrell was a frequent guest at the writer’s ranch.
