History

The name of the square was given by the gates of the city fortress wall Karya-vyarav (Skotoprogonny) that existed here in the 15th – 19th centuries, through these gates livestock belonging to the townspeople were driven out to the pastures outside the city. The gates were demolished in 1849 to improve the transport connection of the city.

In the post-war years , the Siprus cinema (1953-1955, architects Friedrich Wendach , Ilmar Laazi , Peter Tarvas , August Wolberg ) [1] , the construction department of Voenmorproject [2] were built on the square on the site of the houses destroyed during the bombing on March 9, 1944 [2] (architect Aleksey Kuznetsov [3] , now the hotel “My City” [4] )

Notes

  1. ↑ Tallinn: NEW FOUNTAIN IN THE OLD TOWN
  2. ↑ In the place of the two-story Gothic house destroyed by the war, on the corner of Vana-Posti Street in the 1940s of the last century, the building of the Military Marine Project was built in the spirit of stylized Russian classicism, which came into sharp conflict with the surrounding buildings. Archived on August 10, 2015.
  3. ↑ A recognized example of “all-union architecture” in Tallinn was the House of Fleet Officers, built in 1954 according to the design of Alexei Kuznetsov. He also designed the building of the construction department on the corner of Vana-Posti and Suur-Karja streets.
  4. ↑ Hotel My City Hotel
  5. ↑ Kultuuriministeerium
  6. ↑ Monument to the chimney sweep
