Biography
Born January 23, 1845 in Newport, Rhode Island, in the family of Christopher ( English Christopher Grant Perry ) and Francis ( English Frances Sergeant Perry ) Perry. His brother Matthew Perry was a US military and politician, commodore; their grandfather, Oliver Perry, was a naval commander, also a commodore .
Perry received a bachelor 's degree from Harvard University in 1866 and a master 's degree in 1869. Between these years he studied in Europe - in Paris and Berlin . On April 9, 1874, he married Lille Cabot , a prominent American impressionist painter.
From 1868 to 1872 he was a German tutor at Harvard. He also taught English (from 1877 to 1881) and literature (in 1881-1882). In 1898, Perry became a professor of English literature at Keio University , in Tokyo , Japan .
Thomas Perry was a prolific publicist writing on a wide variety of authors, including Alfred de Musset , Arthur Hugh Clough , Bertold Auerbach , Georges Sand , Ivan Turgenev , Mark Twain , Edward Fitzgerald , Walter Scott , Victor Cherbullier , Victor Hugo , Victor Hugo , William Dean Howells ; in many literary publications, including North American Review and The Century: America's Time .
