Biography
Onanei Munis was born on August 17, 1937 in the city of Bayamo in the former Oriente province. He studied at the University of Havana , in 1968 received a bachelor's degree. Since 1959, Munis led the Havana Botanical Garden.
In 1967, Onane Munis became the first director of the Institute of Botany of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. In 1981, he moved to the Institute of Tropic Geography, where he worked as a senior researcher. In 1999, he retired, continuing to engage in geobotanical and floristic studies.
Munis studied the problem of high endemicity of Cuban plants, was engaged in a theoretical recreation of the original flora of the island in the XVI century. In the last days of his life, he made efforts to organize the Metropolitan Park in Havana, in which he planned to keep the last isolated section of the rainforest within the Cuban capital. He also planned to organize an expedition to the southern slope of Turkino peak , hoping to discover new plant species there.
On July 7, 2002 in Havana, Onanei Munis died.
