Heaven and Hell (song)

Heaven and Hell (from English - “Paradise and Hell”) is a song of the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath , released in 1980 on the album of the same name . It was the band’s first album with new vocalist Ronnie James Dio to replace Ozzy Osbourne . The song also came out in concert as side B on the single Die Young . The music was written mainly by Iommi , the text is by Dio, however, due to the traditions established in the group, the copyright applies to all members of the group. The song became a program in the repertoire of the group during its existence without Osbourne and was performed by all vocalists. Also repeatedly performed in solo performances by Dio. The original version of the song was written with Osborne, but differed in text and vocal melody. According to Iommi, he retained a recording of the song performed by Ozzy [1] .

Dio said that this is his favorite song in the work. In an interview with VH1 for the Heavy: History of Metal channel, Dio stated that this is a song about the ability of every person to choose to do good or do evil, in fact that each person has “heaven and hell” within himself. During the concert performance of this song, musicians usually improvise, Iommi lengthens the guitar solo of the guitar, and the vocalists include additional texts about angelic and demonic phenomena, their personal judgment and the like.

The official video of this song with vocalist Tony Martin was released in 1995 on the video footage for the album Cross Purposes Live . She was also performed by Jud Half Priest vocalist Rob Halford on Black Sabbath on November 14 and 15, 1992, during a performance in Costa Mass.

During the composition of the song, due to the fact that Butler temporarily left the group, Dio played along with the bass, but then Jeff Nichols came to the group and he wrote the main part of the part for bass. The bass line resembles the Quartz band's Mainline Riders song, which Nichols previously played. Soon, however, Nichols became the band's session keyboardist, and Craig Gruber recorded the bass part. Later, Butler returned to the group and the entire recording of the bass part with Gruber was cut out. [one]

Martin Popoff in his book, compiled from surveys of 18 thousand fans, artists and journalists, “The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time” ( Rus. The top 500 heavy metal songs of all time ) placed “Heaven and Hell” in 11th place. VH1 placed her on 81st place in the list of best hard rock songs. [2]

Dio's concert performance is recorded on his 1984 solo album A Special from the Spectrum .

Cover versions of the song have been repeatedly played by various groups and performers.

The song sounds in the game Grand Theft Auto IV .
