The word “bakers” is borrowed from the language of the Brazilian Tupi Indians. It is translated into Russian as “a beast that makes many roads in the forest” [1] .
The genus was considered monotypic until the description in 2007 of a giant baker as a separate species [2] , but in our time the status of the latter is called into question [3] [4] . IUCN considers it a synonym for collar bakers [5] .
