Biography
Maria Viktorovna was born in the village of Irkliev , not far from Cherkasy , into a poor noble family. Her father, Viktor Adrianovich Trebinsky, was a descendant of the medieval Serbian prince Ugrichich, who received the “prefix” Trebinsky for the victory over the Turks near the Herzegovinian city of Trebinje . The Ugrichichi-Trebinsky moved to Russia in the 18th century. Subsequently, they lost both the princely title and the first part of their surname ...
Maria Viktorovna brilliantly and prematurely graduated from the Institute of Noble Maidens in Kiev. Even in childhood and student years, she mastered four foreign languages. In her free time, the girl taught literacy to peasant children. She dreamed of becoming a doctor, and getting a medical education in Zurich . But these plans were not destined to materialize. Maria met the historian I.V. Luchitsky and soon married him. Ivan Vasilievich carried away his wife with his scientific interests. At the request of her husband, she began to translate works of interest to him. Maria Viktorovna translated G. Spencer's “Descriptive Sociology” from English into Russian, E. Freeman's “Historical Geography of Europe”, and “The History of the Mental Development of Europe” by the English social Darwinist John Draper; from French - “The History of France of the 19th Century” by L. Gregoire, etc. In the “Northern Herald” (1892, IX — XII), Luchitskaya placed a detailed biography of Sofia Kovalevskaya .
In Kiev, the Luchitsky first lived in the house of Fotina Pavlovna Trebinsky, mother of Maria Viktorovna (Levashovskaya, 22), and then bought a large house on Institutskaya, 27/6, where her initials were still preserved above the main entrances. According to contemporaries, Maria Viktorovna was a wonderful mother of three children and the soul of a family hearth. This restrained tall black-haired woman with blue eyes and South Balkan features, being the exact opposite of an “explosive”, albeit outgoing husband, created an amazing atmosphere of friendliness and comfort in the house.
Maria Viktorovna was the same "workaholic" as Professor Luchitsky. Under her edition, 22 volumes of the collection of works by Victor Hugo and 48 volumes - Emil Zola . In adulthood, she translated the “History of Modern Europe” and “Modern Civilization in Some of its Economic Displays” by W. Kenningham [3] .
The contribution of Maria Viktorovna to Russian Scandinavistics is invaluable. She perfectly studied Swedish, Danish, Danish-Norwegian (Norsk bokmål) and New Norwegian (Norsk nynorsk) languages. And in 1887, presented to the attention of compatriots a huge layer of Scandinavian scientific and fiction [4] . Among her translations, the most appreciated are the collected works of G. Ibsen , B. Bjørnson [5] , Garborg and A. Hjelland (Kjelland) . Excellent knowledge of the medieval realities of Norway helped Luchitskaya in translating historical dramas of the two authors mentioned above. Her choice of Russian transcriptions of numerous Norman proper names (Aslak, Vidkun, Gudrun, Ingvar, Callbein, Sverre, Tordis, Torkel, and many others), in most cases, is very successful, well matching both Norman and Slavic language elements. The later Russian translations of Ibsen and Björnson were already made “with an eye on” the monumental work of Luchitskaya.
During the period of hard times, in 1918, Ivan Vasilievich Luchitsky died on a farm Kavrai. The Kiev press noted that "the circumstances of the death are not known." Even during the life of her husband, Maria Viktorovna ordered to build a crypt on the Askold's grave in Kiev, and it was there that the professors were buried.
One of the Luchitsky’s sons, lawyer Nikolai Ivanovich, did not accept the Soviet regime, and either died in prison from tuberculosis, or was shot in the basement of the former Institute of Noble Maidens in Kiev, which his mother graduated from.
The Luchitsky family crypt on Askold's grave was wiped off the face of the earth in the Soviet years.
In 2000, Luchitskaya’s Memoirs were first published by the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
