Biography
The son of Megacles Alkmeonid and Agarista , the brother of Cleisthenes , Pericles' grandfather on his mother [1] .
Born, apparently, in the mid-550s BC. e., when Megacles was an ally of Pisistratus , and received a name in honor of the tyrant’s father [2] .
Around 546 BC e. Alkmeonides are believed to have been expelled from Athens and moved to Delphi . After the death of Pisistratus in 527 BC. e. his sons returned the exiles. As a sign of reconciliation with the tyrants, Hippocrates is believed to have married the daughter of Hippus . In this marriage Megacles and Agarista were born [3] .
In 514 BC e., after the assassination of Hipparchus , the Alkmeonids were again expelled, Hippocrates divorced his wife and about 511 BC. e. by a second marriage he married his niece, daughter of Arifron and sister of Xanthippus . The son of this marriage was Xanthippus, archon eponym 479/478 BC. e. [3]
The daughter of Hippocrates Agarist became the wife of Xanthippus [1] , who succeeded Clisthenes at the head of the Alkmeonid group.
Tren (elegy-lament) on the death of Hippocrates was written by Pindar ; from this work a fragment has been preserved [4] .
