Etymology
The genus is named for the Italian prince Sanseviero [4] [5] , who lived in the XVIII century.
Known by the name "pike tail" [6] , "Tesins tongue" [7] , "snake skin" [8] .
Use
One of the most famous species - Sansevieria three-lane ( Sansevieria trifasciata ) - unpretentious houseplant . It cleans the air in the premises, including the discharge from plastic window frames. According to NASA , obtained in the course of the “ Clean Air ” research, the species has the ability to actively absorb carbon dioxide and a number of toxic substances to humans from the air, releasing oxygen . This is one of the few plants that can remove carbon dioxide overnight [9] .
According to the latest laboratory research, Sansevieria absorbs carbon dioxide only during the day during photosynthesis, and during the night there is a process of active release of carbon dioxide [10] . In the same study, Sansevieria showed a very good result of formaldehyde removal during the daytime phase, and its invariance at night.
Growing conditions. Reproduction
Quite unpretentious plant that does not require any special conditions of detention. Sansevieria likes bright sunshine and sufficient watering, but it also tolerates a darkened room, air humidity is unimportant. True, for flowering the plant must be kept on a sunny windowsill. The inflorescence consists of white flowers on a long floral arrow, they have a delicate scent. Sansevieria has a creeping rhizome, basal leaves appear on it. For growing a plant, it is preferable to have a wide shallow container filled with a loose mixture: four parts of sod land, two parts of leaf and one part of humus and river sand) [11] .
Usually propagated in spring by dividing the bush, the so-called leaf cuttings or dividing the roots.
