Atkins, Derrick

Derrick Atkins ( born Derrick Atkins ; born January 5, 1984 , Jamaica ) is a Bahamian athlete of Jamaican descent, a short-distance runner [1] . Atkins is a cousin of the famous Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell [2] .

Biography

In 2005, Atkins took part in the World Athletics Championships at a distance of 100 meters, running in 11.57 seconds, thereby not qualifying for the second round [3] .

In 2006, he participated in the games of Central America and the Caribbean , where he won a silver medal at a distance of 100 meters, setting a national record of 10.08 seconds [4] .

April 28, 2007 in Berkeley , California , Atkins broke the national record at a distance of 100 meters. He ran in 9.83 and 9.86 seconds with a tailwind of 2.3 and 2.4 m / s, respectively. Atkins won the silver medal at the 2007 World Athletics Championships at a distance of 100 meters, having run in the final for 9.91 seconds with a head wind of 0.5 m / s, losing 0.06 seconds to Tyson Gay [5] .

In 2008, Atkins participated in the Beijing Olympics , where he performed at a distance of 100 meters . In the first round, Atkins took first place in his race, running in 10.28 seconds.
