The brigade operated the Hungarian battalion named after Sandor Petofi , the German company named after Ernst Thälmann , as well as the “Russian” company , in which 60–80 Soviet citizens fought [1] [2] .
The brigade was formed on October 1, 1943 (according to some information on September 29) in the city of Orahovitsa (Croatia) from units of the Dila partisan detachment and the 12th Slavon brigade consisting of three battalions of 518 soldiers. The brigade received its name by the name of the city Slavonski Brod . A few days after the creation, the Hungarian battalion named after Sandor Petofi joined the brigade. The first brigade commander was Ivan Ergovich (Ivan Jergović) , before that he commanded the Dilsky detachment. Stepan Domankušić was appointed political commissioner, and Đuro Prilika , deputy brigade commander .
Initially, the Brodsky brigade was subordinate to the command of the Eastern group of Croatian partisan detachments. November 3, 1943 was included in the 12th Slavonic division of the 6th Slavonic corps . Since February 4, 1944 she was transferred to the 28th Slavon Division . At the beginning of October 1944 it was transferred to the 12th Voivodship Army Corps of the NOAU [3] .
The brigade conducted active combat activities in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. On October 1, 1944, the Brodsky Brigade was given the honorary name “shock” [4] . In October 1944, the brigade took part in the Belgrade operation . May 3 liberated the city of Kostainitsa. For military merits, the Brodsky Brigade was awarded the orders “For Services to the People” of the 1st degree, as well as the “Brotherhood and Unity” of the 1st degree (1961) [5] .
Russian company brigade
Already during the formation of the multinational Brodsky brigade there were two citizens of the USSR. In the second half of February 1944, the 3rd "Russian" company (ruska četa) was formed in the 2nd battalion of the brigade. It included Soviet prisoners of war who fled from the Nazi camp in the city of Slavonski Brod [6] . The commander of the company was the cavalry officer of the Red Army Matvey Zhukov, the commissar was the former agronomist Ivan (surname unknown), who was soon wounded and did not return to the Brodsky brigade [7] . After that, Zorko адиanadi became the political commissar of the company [8] . On April 3, 1944, the company numbered 39 Soviet citizens.
Soviet fighters distinguished themselves during the two-day April battles for the city of Podravska Slatina , storming well-fortified bunkers around the railway station and destroying about 50 Ustashi . At the same time, there was only one wounded in the company. In September 1944, on the eve of the campaign in Bosnia, there were 50 Soviet citizens in the company — Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Uzbeks, and representatives of other nationalities [9] .
On October 14, 1944, during the offensive of the Brodsky brigade on Zheleznik (a suburb of Belgrade), a meeting of her fighters with soldiers of the Red Army took place. Regic Niall describes this episode as follows: “By pure chance, it was the soldiers of the 3rd company of the 2nd battalion who were the first to encounter the reconnaissance platoon of the Red Army. Seeing the soldiers in helmets ahead, company commander Matvey Zhukov and commissar Zorko Chanadi deployed the fighters for battle. The Red Army did the same. Soon, both sides realized that they were not the enemy. Contact was made quickly and the soldiers rushed towards each other "... [10] .
In November 1944, the 3rd company of the 2nd battalion of the Brodsky brigade departed from the village of Crna-Bara to the location of the Red Army [11] .
