Biography
He ascended the throne at the age of one year; regents during his infancy were his mother and paternal uncle Fernando de Antequera , who divided the country into two parts. After the Compromise, Caspe Fernando left Castile , becoming king of Aragon . His interests continued to be defended by the Aragonese Infants .
In 1418, Katerina Lancaster died. Soon after her death, Juan II married his cousin Maria of Aragon (daughter of his uncle Fernando I of Aragon). The wedding took place in Avila on August 4, 1420, the year before, in March 1419, a ceremony was held in Madrid in Madrid dedicated to Juan II reaching the legal age of 14 years.
The actual ruler during this period was the favorite of King Alvaro de Luna . Alvaro de Luna was in conflict with the Aragonese Infants and the Castilian aristocracy supporting the infants. Alfons V Aragon’s support of his brothers led to the war between Castile and Aragon (1429-30), which ended in the victory of Alvaro de Luna and the expulsion of the Infants.
In 1445, Maria of Aragon died, and de Luna organized a new marriage of the king with the Portuguese infante Isabella . The wedding took place in the city of Madrigal de las Altas Torres on August 17, 1447. Shortly before the death of King Isabella managed to convince him to break off relations with Alvaro and put him to death. Juan II died near Valladolid on July 20, 1454, leaving the throne to his son Enrique IV .
