Slap

Bass guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea plays a slap on his bass guitar Modulus.

Slapping or slapping (from the English. Slapping and popping - slaps and podtsepy) - the technique of playing different types of tools. The term has several meanings.

Description

For a bass guitar, the game with a slap is to strike the phalanx of the thumb against the strings. Most often, strikes are applied to thick (third or fourth) instrument strings. An important element of the slap is the alternation of these beats with sharp hooks of thinner strings with the first or second fingers. Strings at the same time emit characteristic sharp clicks on metal frets. Meanwhile, the strings on the fingerboard with the other hand when playing with a slap are clamped in the same way as when playing a pizzicato or a pick .

Slap on stringed instruments is an amplified pizzicato , in which the pulling force is so great that the string hits the fingerboard , causing a special sound. Another name for this string technique is “Bartok-pizzicato”, since it was the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok who introduced it into his compositions. In jazz, the double bass slap appeared in the late 1920s, gained popularity in the 1940s , then migrated to rockabilly , and then to scyobilly .

Slap on woodwind appeared in the middle of the XX century. The first composers who used this flute technique were the French composers Claude Debussy and Edgar Warez . On the flute, there are two types of slap - lingual and labial. A closed slap is also possible, that is, a slap with a closed ear cushion . On the clarinet, the slap appeared at the beginning of the 20th century in jazz. There are two types - open (very loud) and closed slap (can be performed both quietly and loudly). The same technique of slap and saxophone. Slaps on the oboe and bassoon are also of two kinds, but they differ from the previous ones. The first type of slap is similar to the closed clarinet slap, and the second is performed without a cane.

Slaps on brass instruments are also possible. They are taken using the fast pronunciation of the syllable “ft” in the mouthpiece . In the practice of brass is used quite rarely.

Slap is also possible on the piano . He appeared on the piano in the middle of the XX century. It is extracted as follows. One hand holds the string with a finger on the piano, and the other plays the same sound on the keys. The sound becomes muffled.

On the double bass , the progenitor of the bass , this technique was first used by Steve Brown [1] , Bill Johnson, Pops Foster [1] , Velman Braud and Chester Zardis.
