Biography
Born July 15, 1926 in the city of Livny, Orel Province [4] . Father - Viktor Khristoforovich Khokhlov [5] , former Komsomol worker , squadron political instructor, graduate of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute ; mother - Maria Yakovlevna, she graduated from the Physics Department of Moscow State University and was left to work at the department.
Childhood in the prewar years passed in Moscow [3] . In 1941 he graduated from the seven-year plan, worked as a car mechanic for three years. Then, having passed exams for the secondary school course as an external student, he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute , from where a year later he transferred to the physics department of Moscow State University , where he spent his whole future life from a student in the physics department to the rector [3] .
As a student, Khokhlov became interested in vibrational physics , the laws of which, due to their universality, led the young researcher to a wide range of problems. Some of them were already solved in graduate school at the department of vibrations of the radiophysical department of the physics department, where Khokhlov, as a student, had prepared his first printed work for publication.
In 1952, after graduating from the graduate school of the Faculty of Physics in the Department of Oscillation Physics, he defended his thesis on the theory of non-stationary phenomena in waveguides [6] . From the same year - on teaching at Moscow State University . In 1959 he was sent on a one-year scientific mission to Stanford University (USA). In 1962 he defended his doctoral dissertation , together with S. A. Akhmanov organized at Moscow State University the first non-linear optics laboratory in the USSR . Since 1963, professor at Moscow State University. In the 1960s, Khokhlov became a major scientist, making a serious scientific contribution to the development of nonlinear optics , radiophysics , oscillation theory , acoustics, and quantum electronics .
The recognition in the scientific world was brought to Khokhlov by two works published in 1961: “On the theory of shock radio waves in nonlinear lines” and “On the propagation of waves in nonlinear dispersive lines”. The first monograph laid the foundations of theoretical nonlinear acoustics, the second formed the basis of the theory of propagation of electromagnetic waves in nonlinear media [3] .
In 1964, the first monograph in the world literature devoted to the problems of nonlinear optics was published. Subsequently, the expanding interests of Rem Viktorovich led him to the fundamental problems of nonlinear acoustics. Khokhlov put forward a number of fundamental ideas for the creation of new types of lasers and laser spectroscopy, organized the department of wave processes at Moscow University.
In 1966 he was elected a corresponding member, and in 1974 an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences . Since 1975, Khokhlov is a member of the Presidium, and since 1977 and. about. Vice President of the USSR Academy of Sciences [3] . Laureate of the prize named after M.V. Lomonosov I degree (1964). Laureate of the Lenin Prize (1970) and the State Prize of the USSR (1985, posthumous).
In 1973, Rem Viktorovich Khokhlov became rector of Moscow University [7] . In this post, Khokhlov drew special attention to the prospect of developing broad inter-faculty relations, the creation of laboratories, the organization of multifaceted expeditions, the opening of problem centers. He called for the interaction of university teams in solving the complex tasks of science, education and production. During his rectorship at the University, the Faculty of Biology and Soil was divided into two independent faculties of Biology and Soil Science, scientific coordination councils were created on philosophical problems of ecology and on the interaction of man and the biosphere , and agreements on scientific exchange were signed between Moscow State University and universities in Japan and the USA.
At that time, a complex engineering-geological expedition of the geological faculty and a student teaching and research unit of the biological faculty on specific problems of the national economy in the conditions of unexplored areas worked on the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway. In October 1975 , the university received cosmonauts and astronauts of the Soviet-American Soyuz-Apollon flight. In 1976, a new student dormitory for 2400 places was built on Vernadsky Avenue and preferential meals were organized by subscription for first-year students. In the same year, the curricula of Moscow and Sofia State Universities were coordinated in accordance with the comprehensive program of economic integration of the member countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance.
In August 1975, Khokhlov was elected vice president of the International Association of Universities. Since 1974, deputy of the Supreme Council of the USSR . In 1976, at the 25th Congress of the CPSU, he was elected a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU (member of the CPSU since 1951 ). Foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1976).
The life of the rector of Moscow University ended abruptly: a climber with more than twenty years of experience, a candidate for master of sports in mountaineering, he climbed the Peak of Communism in the Pamirs in the summer of 1977. An emergency (rescue work for another expedition) did not allow for acclimatization before a difficult ascent. When several hundred meters remained to the top, they began a forced descent. It was removed from a height of more than 6,000 m by helicopter (pilot Igor Ivanov) and delivered to Dushanbe, and then to Moscow. On August 8, 1977 , despite the efforts of physicians, Rem Viktorovich Khokhlov died. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery [8] in Moscow [2] .
Memory
In honor of R.V. Khokhlov, the alpclub of Moscow State University , a street on the territory of Moscow State University, as well as the Central Physical Audience of the Physics Department of Moscow State University, Khokhlov peak 6708 meters high (near the peak of Communism) are named.
On May 15, 1981 [9] , a memorial plaque with his name was opened on the case of nonlinear optics at Moscow State University (Leninsky Gory, 1, p. 62).
In 2002, a challenge Cup in memory of Rem Khokhlov was established, which is awarded to the winner of the ski race held by Moscow State University together with the Moscow Climbing Club among skiers-climbers of Moscow State University and the city of Moscow.
Family
He was married to the daughter of the chemist M. M. Dubinin, Elena Mikhailovna, assistant professor of physics at Moscow State University.
One of his sons, Alexey (born 1954), is a specialist in physics and chemistry of polymers, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, vice-rector of Moscow State University, head of the department of polymers and crystals of the physics department of Moscow State University.
The second son, Dmitry (born 1957), is also a physicist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (May 29, 2008), head of the Department of General Physics and Condensed Matter Physics, Faculty of Physics, Moscow State University, and a specialist in the field of semiconductor physics [10] .
