History
The team was founded on April 1, 1908 . The name was simultaneously given in honor of St. Lawrence and the Catholic priest Lorenzo Massa , who helped the new team, providing a platform for games. He played a new club in the Almagro area, which is also reflected in the name. Since the formation of professional football in 1931 , the team has been one of the five best clubs in Argentina, along with River Plate , Boca Juniors , Racing and Independente .
In 1933, the club won its first professional title. The famous Basque Isidro Langara played for the team. The next title was won in 1946 , which interrupted the winning streak of River Plate in the Argentine championship. In the same year, the team went on a tour of Spain and Portugal and held a series of friendly matches there. After the defeat of Real Madrid , the Saints beat Barcelona and the national teams of Spain and Portugal . Spanish journalists have called San Lorenzo "the best team in the world." Football player Rene Pontoni was offered a contract with Barcelona, but he refused to leave his native Argentina. Another footballer, Reynaldo Martino, remained in Europe and became the star of the Juventus Turin.
“San Lorenzo” was one of the main favorites of the first Libertadores Cup in 1960 , but lost in the semifinal in a stubborn three-match fight to the future winner of the Uruguayan “Peñarol” .
In 1968, the team began to be called Los matadores because it did not concede in any of the championship games. In the period from 1968 to 1974, San Lorenzo won 4 titles.
In 1981, the club flew into the minor league, but in 1982, he returned to the elite of Argentine football. At that time, the team did not have its own stadium, and the management of San Lorenzo constantly suffered losses due to high rents. During the reign of President Fernando Mile ( 1986 - 2001 ), the club acquired a new arena, “ Nuevo Gasometro ” (translated into Russian - “new gas holder”, the official name of the stadium in honor of the former president of the club - Estadio Pedro Bidegain ) [2] , and twice became the champion of the country ( 1995 , 2001 ).
At the turn of the century, victories in the international arena came to the team. San Lorenzo won the last Mercosur Cup in 2001 , and a year later became the winner of the first South American Cup . In the main tournament of South America , the Copa Libertadores, “San Lorenzo” for a long time could not overcome the semifinal stage ( 1960 , 1973 , 1988 ), but in 2014 for the first time in its history was able to break into the finals, where the Paraguayan defeated in the sum of two matches Nacional finally winning the main continental trophy.
San Lorenzo is associated with a working class team. The main opponent of the club is “ Huracan ” [3] .
