History
The title of Marquis Ails was created on September 10, 1831 for Archibald Kennedy, 12th Earl of Cassilis (1770-1846).
The title of Count Cassilis was created in 1509 for David Kennedy, 3rd Lord Kennedy (1463-1513). The title of Lord Kennedy in the Scottish Peer system was created in 1457 .
On November 12, 1806, Archibald Kennedy, 12th Earl of Cassilis (1770–1846), received the title of Baron Ayles in the United Kingdom Peersty system.
The title comes from the island of Ayles Craig in the Firth of Clyde . This island is still family owned, but it is currently for sale for £ 1,500,000.
James Kennedy (c. 1408–1465), Archbishop of St. Andrews (1440–1465), was the younger brother of Gilbert Kennedy, 1st Lord Kennedy.
The Marquis of Ailes is the ancestral leader of the Scottish Kennedy clan .

Between 1759 and 1762, titles and estates were the subject of a dispute between William Douglas, Earl March and Raglan (1724-1810), the future 4th Duke of Queensberry (from 1778 ), and Thomas Kennedy, 4th Baronet from Kalzin (d. 1775 ) William Douglas was the son of William Douglas, 2nd Earl of March, and Lady Anne Hamilton, suo-jure of Countess Raglan. Anne Hamilton was the eldest daughter of John Hamilton, 1st Earl of Raglen (c. 1664-1744), from his first wife Anne Kennedy (d. 1699), the only daughter of John Kennedy, 7th Earl of Cassilis (1653-1701), first marriage with Lady Suzanne Hamilton (d. 1694 ). William Douglas began to refer to himself as "William, Earl of Cassilis, Raglen and March . "
His opponent was Sir Thomas Kennedy, 4th Baronet from Kalzin (d. 1775 ), second son of Sir John Kennedy, 2nd Baronet from Kalzin (d. 1742 ) and grandson of Sir Archibald Kennedy, 1st Baronet from Kalzin (mind 1710 ), a descendant of Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassilis (1515–1558). In 1744, after the death of his childless older brother John Kennedy, 3rd Baronet, Thomas Kennedy inherited the title of Baronet .
On January 27, 1762, the House of Lords of Great Britain formally recognized Thomas Kennedy, 4th Baronet from Kalsin, direct male descendant of David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassilis, following Earl of Cassilis .
