Ten American Artists ( English Ten American Painters or shortly Ten ( English The Ten )) - an association of American artists, created in 1897 , separated from the Society of American Artists .
History
Ten American painters left the Society of American Artists at the end of 1897 due to the fact that they considered the location of mediocre artists in his managerial positions, the devaluation of impressionism in comparison with classicism and romantic realism, and the poor attitude of society towards exhibition activities. Also, in their opinion, the exhibitions organized by the society were too commercial in nature.
The new artistic association included: Edward Simmons , Willard Metcalf , Childe Hassam , Julian Weir , Robert Reid , John Twachtman , Frank Benson , Edmund Tarbell , Thomas Dewing , Joseph De Camp . After forming the group, its members asked Winslow Homer to join her, but he refused. Another artist - Abbott Tayer - joined them, but soon changed his mind and left the composition. And when Twought died in 1902, William Chase joined the Top Ten. [one]
All ten artists worked in New York or Boston . They announced that new members can be accepted into their group only with the unanimous positive decision of all participants. The association has been working for twenty years, holding annual exhibitions. Its existence ended with the death of a number of participants.
