Flag Description
The size of the flag is 1: 2. It consists of three horizontal stripes of the same width, the upper one is white, the middle one is red and the lower one is black [1] . It was developed by Valentin Devyatkin and approved by the Mastorava Society in 1990. The primary colors “repeat the colors of the patterns of male and female Erzya national costumes” [1] .
Years later, the Erzyan flag was approved by the Congress of the Erzya People:
“The Erzyan Congress affirms a white-red-black (top to bottom) flag as a flag of the people's erzya, symbolizing in its colors the Freedom, Life and Earth of the Erzya people” [2] .
Flag Explanation
The black color is not only the color of the earth, but also the color of the bullet - the hip of the Erzya women’s national costume. This suggests the conclusion that for the ancestors of the Erzyan, black is not the color of mourning, but a color symbolizing fertility and the feminine. In a broader sense, this is Mastorava (literally Russian. Mother Earth from Erz. Mastor - earth, Erz. Ava - mother). If we assume that red is blood - a symbol of the Erzya people, and white - a symbol of Ineshkipaz ( Russian Supreme God ), then we get the following semantic series: "Ineshkipaz-Erzya-Mastorava".
In addition to the main interpretation of the meaning of colors, the following interpretation will also be considered reasonable: Mastorava (black), provides support and the life of an erza (red), who lives and works on it, above them Ineshkipaz (white), protecting and patronizing them.
Using the flag
The “black-red-white” tricolor is used both on official Erzyan holidays and in the ordinary, cultural life of the nation. The Erzyan flag is legitimate [3] for its people, being not even recognized by official authorities. Most of the holidays in which the flag is used have been hosted by the congresses of the Erzya people:
- April 16 - Erzyan Language Day [4] , [5] , [6] ( Erz. Erzyan Kelen Chi )
- Rural Prayer [7] ( Erz. Velen Ozks )
- All-Armenian prayer-holiday [8] , [9] ( Erz. Rasken Ozks )
- Congress of the Erzyan People [10] , [11] ( Erz. Erzyan Inekujo )
- Erzyan Lismaprya [12] , [13] .
- December 21 - Day of the epic "Mastorava" [14]
Among other things, the “Erzyan Raskenkoct” fluttered at the VI World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples [15] , at the Congress of MAFUN [16] , in the town of Hannya [17] , as well as in the Altai Territory [18] and the Nizhny Novgorod Region [19] .
