He began to actively engage in rowing in early childhood, was trained in the local rowing section, and at various times was a member of the voluntary sports societies Burevestnik and Dynamo .
He achieved his first serious success at the adult level in 1986, when he became the champion of the Soviet Union at a distance of 1000 meters as part of a four-seater crew, which also included rowers Vladimir Mozheiko , Victor Pusev and Nikolai Shershen . Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul - he started alone at a thousand meters, successfully went to the final stage, but finished only in fourth in the decisive race, not reaching the prize positions.
After the Seoul Olympics, Bankovsky remained in the main team of the Soviet national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1990, he won the All-Union Championship in the classification of four-person kayaks at a distance of 10,000 meters, while his partners were Vladimir Bobresov , Alexander Myzgin and Arturas Veta . With the same composition, they went to represent the country at the World Championships in Poznan, Poland, and in the ten-kilometer race the fours defeated all their rivals, thereby winning gold medals.
In 1991, Dmitry Bankovsky became the champion of the Soviet Union for the third time, with the same partners he defended the championship among fours at ten kilometers. For outstanding sports achievements he was awarded the honorary title " Master of Sports of the USSR of the international class ."
