Biography
Born in Samosat, the former capital of Commagene , and at that time a city of the Roman province.
About his early years it is only known that he was of low origin.
He received a brilliant secular education, he was first a public speaker and sophist in Antioch, and between 260 and 262 he occupied the episcopal department in Antioch. Having acquired the special location of the queen of Palmyra, Zenobia (who ruled Syria at that time), he also held a secular post of dictionaries, which enabled him to live richly and luxuriously.
By building on the Antiochian pulpit, monarchism caused controversy. At the Antioch Council in 269, he was "convicted" by the presbyter Malchion in heresy and was deposed. Paul denied the divine essence of Christ and the discernment of the Faces of the Father , the Son, and the Holy Spirit , believing that there is only one divine Person (Hypostasis). He believed that God the Word or the Logos is only the power of God, and Jesus Christ was by nature only a man to whom God the Word later descended. It is noteworthy that Pavel Samosatsky used the term “Unified” for the relation of God the Word to God, but he understood this term in the sense of the absence of a distinction of Persons in God [1] . However, using the support of Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra , Paul kept the Antiochian pulpit until 272 , when the Emperor Aurelian at the request of the Christians expelled him from Antioch.
The disciple of Pavel Samosatsky, the martyr Lucian of Antioch , was later the teacher of Arius .
