Michael “Mike” Collins ( born October 31, 1930 , Rome , Italy ), American astronaut and test pilot , brigadier general of the US Air Force of Irish descent. Currently retired.

Been in space twice. The first flight - on the " Gemini 10 " ( July 1966 ), his commander was John Young . In this flight, he went out into outer space twice (the first person in the world to complete the second exit). The second flight was around the moon on Apollo 11 (July 1969 ), when Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin first landed on the surface of the Earth’s satellite. Collins at that time piloted the command module in the orbit of the moon. He is one of 24 people flying to the moon . For this flight, Collins was awarded the NASA Medal of Excellence in 1970 .
Before flying into space, Michael Collins graduated from the U.S. Military Academy , joined the U.S. Air Force, served as a fighter pilot, and was trained as a test pilot.
Included in the Astronaut Hall of Fame . In 1969 he was awarded the Callum Medal .
In 1970, the International Astronomical Union named Michael Collins crater on the visible side of the moon .
In 2009, he was awarded the highest award by the United States with the Congressional Gold Medal (awarded August 16, 2011 ).
