There is no information left about the origin of Rutilian. From one fragmentary military diploma preserved in Lower Pannonia , it follows that in 192 Rutilian held the post of consul-suffice along with Guy Emilius Severus Cantabrian . In addition, he is identified with a certain Rutilian mentioned in the letter of the emperor Caracalla from 215 as a consul of Lycia . P. M. M. Leunissen believes that he was consul of Cilicia . A further biography of Rutilian is unknown.
