Biography and career

The hereditary actor, the son of film actress Junko Fuji and one of the most famous modern kabuki actors Onoe Kikugoro VII , a descendant of the theater clan Onoe, known from the late XVII - early XVIII centuries; Kazuyasu Shinobu's older sister also chose an acting career. He mastered kabuki from early childhood; first appeared on stage under the name Onoe Usinosuke at the age of 6, in February 1984, directed by Ehon Ushiwakamaru about the youth of Minamoto-no Yoshitsune .

The current name Onoe Kikunosuke V received at the age of 18, in May 1996, inheriting it, like the first name, from his father (who was named Kikunosuke IV in 1965-1972) and his grandfather ( Onoe Baiko VII , speaking as Onoe Kikunosuke III in 1935-1947). During his youth, Onoe studied traditional stage dance under the guidance of Fujima Kanso II and Onoe Shiroku II, playing mainly onnagata (female roles), but gradually mastering youthful roles, in particular the role of Minamoto-no Yoshitsune in the 1964 Kanjincho production.

In addition to the classic Japanese repertoire, Onoe Kikunosuke V's repertoire also contains localizations of western dramas. In particular, he played the main roles in the Shabspir adaptation of Shakespeare's “ Twelfth Night ” under the direction of director Yukio Ninagawa [1] , playing the equivalent roles of Viola / Cesario and Sebastian (Princess Biva- hime, her alter-ego Sisimaru and brother Shujennosuke respectively). The play was first staged in Kabukidza in 2005, and subsequently successfully toured both other Japanese theaters and the London Barbican Theater (in 2009) [2] [3] .
