Russell Hals and Joseph Taylor made their discovery in 1974, while observing with a radio telescope in Arecibo, they first discovered the double pulsar PSR B1913 + 16 .

In 1991, measurements of the contracting orbit of this pair of stars forming a pulsar gave confirmation of the general theory of relativity , and the possibility of radiation of gravitational waves by this system.
