Scientific Activities

Areas of scientific interest - the theory of groups and the theory of linear inequalities. He is one of the creators of the modern theory of infinite groups, which is impossible to imagine without Chernikov groups. The creator of the algebraic theory of linear inequalities, which has found wide practical application.

Pupils of S. N. Chernikov - pupils of algebraic schools created by him in Sverdlovsk , Perm and Kiev - are: founder of the Institute of Cybernetics of the USSR Academy of Sciences full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR V.M.Glushkov , corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR M.I. I. Eremin , 17 doctors and 34 candidates of sciences. The book "Algebra and Linear Inequalities. On the centenary of Sergei Nikolaevich Chernikov," published in 2012 by the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, contains a tree of students of S. N. Chernikov - doctors and candidates of sciences. There are 225 names in it, of which 71 are doctors of science. In the Perm branch of this tree - 161 people, of which 43 are doctors of science.

Author of the monographs "Linear inequalities" (1968), "Groups with given properties of a system of subgroups" (1980) and about 140 scientific papers. For a complete list of S. N. Chernikov’s publications, see [3] .

Memory

  • In the building number 2 of the Perm University in 2010, a memorial plaque was installed in memory of Sergei Nikolaevich Chernikov [4] . By his centenary in 2012, an audience of his name was opened next to it [5] .
  • In 2012, the centenary of the birth of S. N. Chernikov was celebrated. A scientific conference dedicated to this date was held in Yekaterinburg [6] [7] .

Awards

  • Medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" (1946).
  • The first prize of the Ural University for the best scientific work (1948).
  • Order of Friendship of Peoples (1982).
