He graduated from the Moscow Higher Military Command School . He served in the GDR , and then in the Belarusian Red Banner Military District . For seven years he served in the 24th separate mechanized brigade, where, after graduating from the National Academy of Defense of Ukraine, he returned as chief of staff . For four years he was the commander of the 300th separate mechanized regiment in Chernivtsi , and in April 2005 he headed the 72nd separate mechanized brigade. Since 2009 - Chief of Staff of the 8th Army Corps [1] . In May 2012 he was appointed commander of the 6th Army Corps . In November 2013, the 6th Army Corps was reorganized into Command South, of which he remained acting commander. At the same time he was the head of the Dnepropetrovsk garrison.

During the armed conflict in the east of Ukraine, at one time he held the position of commander of the sector "B" . From 2016 - Chief of Staff - First Deputy Commander of the Land Forces of Ukraine [2] .

On May 21, 2019, the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, signed Decree No. 302 on the appointment of Ruslan Homchak to the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine [3] .

Member of the National Security Council (May 31, 2019) [4] .
