Born in the north of Moscow (in the present day Voikovsky district), the first years of his life fell on the difficult period of the Great Patriotic War. From childhood he was fond of sailing and boer, enrolling in the Central Sports Club of the Navy, located in Moscow on the banks of the Khimki reservoir.
Member and winner of all-Union competitions and championships, sports and athletics of the USSR, international regattas. As the coach of the USSR national sailing team Leonard Yakovlevich Mitnitsky said in an interview with the magazine “Boats and Yachts” in 1964: “With a sailor like V. Nikolin, you can confidently go to the start”
Member of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964 (9th place) on a Dragon class yacht in a carriage with Yuri Shavrin and Lev Alekseev.
At the competitions held after the 1964 Olympics, the crew of Y. Shavrin showed good results. In 1968, at the championship of the USSR and XX Baltic regatta, the crew of Y. Shavrin (one of the strongest crews of the USSR in the Dragon class), which included V. Nikolin, took first place, but at the Olympics in Mexico, by decision of the head coach of the USSR national team I Lavrov, the crew of the younger Yu. Anisimov, who became the champion of Europe in 1968, went.
Due to the “political” decision of the sailing leadership, V. Nikolin was “restricted to travel abroad” until the mid-80s and could not take part in prestigious international competitions, which did not affect the sportsman’s fate in the best way. Since 1969, V. Nikolin acted as a helmsman in the Dragon class. Since 1972, after the Dragon class was expelled from the Olympic program, V. Nicolin became the helmsman in the Soling class.
He graduated from sports activities in the Soling yacht class. He was engaged in coaching in the CSK Navy team (coach of the USSR national team, including coached A. Balashov ). He was a judge of sailing competitions.
The regattas strengthened the friendship of three famous sailing "B" - Vladimir Leontyev , Valery Nikolin, Valentin Zamotaykin .
