In this 384-page book, Hawking and Ellis attempt to describe the essence of space as a whole, as well as reveal the nature of the infinite expansion of the universe and the formation of black holes . The authors use differential geometry to study the consequences of Einstein's general theory of relativity , but the results are also valid in other metric theories of gravity , in which the gravitational interaction is always attractive. The global space-time research methods systematically described in the monograph are used to study singularities and space-time defects , in particular, to obtain singularity theorems .

Hawking wrote this book as a postdoc at Cambridge University , based on his 1966 essay, Singularities and the Geometry of Spacetime [1] , awarded the Adams Prize [2] . In a later “ Brief History of Time ” of 1988, he describes the book The Large-Scale Structure of Space-Time as “Extremely Technical” and incomprehensible to the average reader, even with scientific background [3] .

Nowadays, this book is considered a classic book on the general theory of relativity [3] [4] , as well as an outstanding monograph of the mathematical direction of the description of Lorentzian geometry as a whole [5] . It has been reprinted many times. In 1977, a Russian translation of the book was published, also reprinted in 1998 by the publishing house of IO NFMI in the series Masterpieces of World Physics and Mathematics Literature .
