History
The title of Count Iddlesley was created on July 3, 1885 for the conservative politician, Sir Stafford Northcote, the 8th Baronet (1818–1887). He served as chairman of the Trade Council (1866–1867), secretary of state for Indian affairs (1867–1868), chancellor of the treasury (1874–1880), first lord of the treasury (1885–1886) and British Foreign Secretary (1886–1887) . He was also the leader of the House of Commons (1876–1880), the leader of the Conservatives in the House of Commons (1876–1885), and the leader of the Conservative Party (1881–1885). Together with the title of count in 1885, he received the title of Viscount of St. Cyres from Newton St. Cyres in the county of Devonshire (Peerstvo of the United Kingdom ).
He was succeeded by his eldest son, Walter Stafford Northcote, 2nd Earl of Iddesley (1845-1927). He served as chairman of the Internal Revenue Council . After his death, the count's title passed to his nephew , Henry Stafford Northcote, 3rd Earl of Idesdesley (1901-1970). He was the youngest son of the Rev. Hon. John Stafford Northcote, the third son of the 1st Earl of Ideslie. His eldest son, Stafford Henry Northcote, 4th Earl of Iddesley (1932-2004), served as Deputy Lieutenant Devon.
As of 2014 , the title holder was his only son, John Stafford Northcote, 5th Earl of Iddlesley (born 1957 ), who succeeded his father in 2004 .
The title of Baronet of Northcote from Hain in the county of Devonshire (Baronetry of England) was created in 1641 for John Northcote (1600-1676). He represented Ashburton (1640–1648), Devon (1654–1659, 1660–1661) and Barnstaple (1667–1676) in the House of Commons. His grandson, Francis Northcote, 3rd Baronet (1659-1709), died childless. His younger brother, Henry Northcote, 4th Baronet (1667-1730) became his successor. He was a doctor of medicine . His son, Henry Northcote, 5th Baronet (1710-1743), sat in the House of Commons from Exeter (1735-1743). His descendant, the aforementioned Stafford Northcote, 8th Baronet , was elevated to the rank of peer of the United Kingdom in 1885 .
