The disc is a Gothic rock built on simple guitar riffs , a characteristic vocal technique close to a scream, and complemented by noise effects typical of industrial [2] . On subsequent albums, thrash metal and industrial will completely disappear. Nevertheless, on the first Type O Negative album, features that will later become the band's calling card: sex , unhappy love and death as the main themes of songs and the irony of the lyrics are already clearly visible.
The name of the second track - “Der Untermensch” (from the German subhuman ; this word was used by the Nazis in relation to those whom they considered “lower races”) - led to the group being accused of sympathy for Nazism . In fact, this song is a protest against the fact that criminals, including drug dealers, profit from government benefits for the poor. For Type O Negative, politicized lyrics are uncharacteristic, unlike Steele’s work as part of Carnivore, where songs on acutely social topics prevailed. As a result, during a tour of Europe, Type O Negative faced harsh criticism and protests from leftist organizations.
