Content
Perennial herbaceous plants. Ligula fringed or fringed-membranous.
Common inflorescence consists of unbranched twigs with spikelets crowded on one side. The lower spikelet scales are much smaller than the upper one. Lower floral scales with awn (may be absent from the lowest ones).
Photosynthesis : C 3 and C 4 .
The chromosome number is 2n = 18, 54.
