In 1547, during the struggle of Nagao Kagetora (future Uesugi Kenshin) for power with his older brother Nagao Harukage, Masakage, despite the fact that he was already married to the elder sister of Kagetora Ae (the marriage was concluded in 1537), supported Harukage. A year later, Harukage surrendered to his younger brother and retired to retire. Unhappy with this, Masakage tried to raise an insurrection in 1550, but a year later he was defeated by Kagetora. Subsequently, he became an important vassal of Nagao Kagetora. When his overlord suddenly left the reins and retired to the monastery, Masakage convinced him to return.
On August 11, 1564, at the age of 38, Nagao Masakage drowned with another Uesugi vassal, Usami Sadamitsu , in Nojiri Pond. According to one version, Osami Sadamitsu drowned him at the cost of his own life on the orders of Kenshin, who saw Masakage as a possible source of instability, on the other, they were both just too drunk and drowned by negligence.
His son Akikage was adopted by Kenshin, a vow of celibacy, under the name Kiheiji, later adopting the adult name Kagekatsu . After the death of Uesugi Kenshin and victory in the struggle for power with another adopted son of Kenshin Uesugi Kagetora, he became the head of the Uesugi clan .
