NBA Draft
|
This draft holds the record for the number of players who later played in the NBA, their number was 66. Draft was accompanied by various problems associated with drugs. The most noticeable was the death from cocaine overdose by the highly regarded Lena Bayasa two days after he was selected as the second number of the current champion of the Boston Celtics . Also, because of drugs and alcohol, NBA careers at Chris Washburn , Roy Tarpley and William Bedford have failed.
The careers of the players selected in the first round of the draft were largely unsuccessful, while the second round gave the league a number of talented players. Dennis Rodman became the strongest defender, one of the best in the selection in the history of the NBA and was introduced to the Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2011. Marc Price , Kevin Duckworth and Jeff Hornasek had successful careers, and each of them participated in the All-Star Game . You can also mention Johnny Newman , Nate McMillan and David Wingate , who were the leading players in their teams.
This draft is notable for two European players who were hampered by unusual reasons for their overseas career. Selected in the third round, Drazen Petrovich reached the level of a star caliber player by the fourth season in the NBA, but his life was tragically cut short in a car accident in 1993. He was later included in the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame and the FIB Hall of Fame . Another player is Arvydas Sabonis , who was not allowed to play in the NBA because of the strained political climate between the USSR and the United States. Moreover, it was already the second draft of Sabonis - in 1985 he was chosen by the “Atlanta Hawks” , but the results were canceled due to the youth of Arvydas. He won two Olympic medals before the debut in the NBA - gold in 1988 with the USSR and bronze in 1992 with Lithuania . In 1989, Sabonis was allowed to leave the USSR, but instead of the NBA, he went to Europe and joined the Portland Trail Blazers who chose him only in 1995 at the age of 31, already having problems with his knee and Achilles tendon. According to the results of the first season, Arvydas took the second place according to the results of voting for the title of the Best Sixth Player and Novice of the Year . Sabonis was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010 and the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame.
This draft is also highlighted by the number of players who have made an important contribution to off-site basketball. For example, Nate McMillan brought a lot of help to Seattle Supersonics as a player, and then as head coach, and still works as a coach in the NBA. Scott Skayles became the first coach to lead the Chicago Bulls into the playoffs in the post-Jordan era. Larry Christkovyak was the head coach of Milwaukee Bucks and the NCAA . John Sally won four championship rings with three different teams before becoming one of the leading sports shows on the Fox Sports Network. Mark Price was an assistant to the head coach at the NCAA, as well as a casting consultant for some NBA teams, and in December 2011 he was named the best development coach for the players at the Orlando Magic . [1] Jeff Hornasek spent two seasons as an assistant to the head coach of Utah Jazz , before becoming head coach of the Phoenix Suns . Pete Myers was the assistant to the head coach of the Chicago Bulls and the Golden State Warriors . Jim Les was an assistant coach in the women's NBA and head coach at the NCAA.
Jay Bilas , selected in the fifth round under the 108th number, but never playing in the NBA, is a basketball analyst at ESPN .
