Earl of Lytton Earl of Lytton is an inherited title in the United Kingdom Peer system .
History
The title of Earl Lytton was created on April 28, 1880 for the diplomat and poet Robert Bulver-Lytton, 2nd Baron Lytton (1831-1891). He served as Viceroy of India (1876–1880) and British Ambassador to France (1887–1891). Together with the count, he received the title of Viscount Nebworth from Nebworth in the county of Hertfordshire ( Peerstvo of the United Kingdom ). Robert Bullwer-Lytton was the son of the British politician, poet and writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-1873). Edward was the author of numerous popular novels, poems and dramas, and also served as Secretary of State for the colonies in the Earl of Derby government (1858–1859). Edward Bulver was the third (youngest) son of General William Jarl Bulver (1757-1807) and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton. (1773-1843), daughter of Richard Warburton Lytton of Nebworth House in Hertfordshire . Through this marriage, the Nebworth House estate passed to the Bulwer family.
In 1828, Edward Bulwer-Lytton received the title of Baronet from Nebworth House in the county of Hertfordshire ( United Kingdom Baronetry ). In 1866, he became a peer in the United Kingdom, receiving the title of Baron Lytton from Nebworth in Hertfordshire . In 1844, he received royal permission for the additional surname Lytton.
In 1891, Lord Lytton was succeeded by his third son, Victor Alexander George Robert Bullwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl Lytton (1876-1947). He was also a politician, served as Deputy Secretary of State for Indian Affairs (1920-1922), Viceroy of India (1925) and Governor of Bengal (1922-1927).
In 1902, Victor Bulver-Lytton married Pamela Chichele-Plauden - the former love object of Winston Churchill . They had two sons: Anthony Bulwer-Lytton, Viscount Nebworth , and Alexander Bulwer-Lytton, Viscount Nebworth, who died before their father. Their daughter Hermione Lytton (1905-2004), married Cameron Cobbold, 1st Baron Cobbold (1904-1987). Thanks to this marriage, the Nebworth House estate passed into the possession of the Kobbold family. He was succeeded by his younger brother, Neville Stephen Bullwer-Lytton, 3rd Earl of Lytton (1879-1951), a British artist and jealous-pom player, bronze medalist of the 1908 Summer Olympics. In 1899, he married Judith Blunt, 16th Baroness Wentworth (1873-1957), daughter of poet Wilfrid Scoen Blunt (1840-1922) and Anne, 15th Baroness Wentworth (1837-1917), granddaughter of Lord Byron . In 1923, their marriage was dissolved.
In 1951, Lord Lytton was succeeded by his son Noel Lytton, 4th Earl Lytton (1900-1985). In 1957, after the death of his mother, Anne Blunt, Noel Lytton became the 16th Baron Wentworth ( Peer of England ). In 1925, he received royal permission for the additional surname "Milbank", but in 1951 the use of this surname was officially stopped.
As of 2014 , the title holder was his eldest son, John Peter Michael Scohen Lytton, 5th Earl Lytton (born 1950 ), who succeeded his father in 1985 .
Another member of the family was the liberal politician , diplomat and writer Henry Bullter, 1st Baron Dalling and Bulver (1801-1872), the older brother of 1st Baron Lytton.
