History
The idea of creating a civilian airport in Billund appeared in 1961 , when the owner of LEGO, Gottfried Kirk Christiansen, built an 800-meter runway and a hangar to the north of his factory. The interest in the project was shown by the nearby communes, which became part of the owners of the new airport and took part in the transformation of a private airfield into a civilian airport.
The construction of the airport began in 1964 and was completed on November 1 of the same year. The airport consisted of one 1660 by 45 m runway, a small platform for servicing flights and a tower with a flight service center. The passenger terminal was opened only in the spring of 1966 , until then passengers were accommodated in the LEGO hangar. Further, the airport expanded, new terminal buildings, a tax-free zone, parking lots and other infrastructure facilities were built.
In 1997, a new passenger terminal with an area of 40,000 m2 was built north of the old airport building, capable of receiving up to 3.5 million passengers a year. The old airport building began to be used to receive private aviation, as well as cargo transportation. In the same 1997, airport management was reorganized, the managing company Billund Airport A / S was created, the shareholders of which were neighboring municipalities. As of January 1, 2007, the company owned the following communes: Vejle (34.3%), Calling (25.9%), Billund (15%), Horsens (10.7%), Fredericia (6.9% ), Ikast-Branne (1%), Hedensted (6.1%), Skanderborg (0.1%).
In 2008, the airport runway was reconstructed, as a result it was lengthened. The reconstruction took place in record time, it took only 14 hours and did not require the closure of the runway. The reconstruction of the airport contributed to the growth of passenger traffic and the development of the airport route network. The decisive role was played by KLM , which transported about 200 thousand passengers a year along the Billund- Amsterdam route, as well as Ryanair , which launched five new scheduled flights from Billund in 2012, bringing the total number of scheduled flights from the airport to 19.
Infrastructure
Currently, the airport infrastructure allows you to receive more than two million passengers a year, as well as several million tons of cargo. The main runway of the airport is able to accept Boeing 747 aircraft , however, most flights are operated on smaller aircraft such as ATR-42 , Boeing 757 and Boeing 737 . Boeing 747 aircraft are currently landing at the airport as part of cargo transportation. In 2011 - 2012 , the airport began to receive such long-haul aircraft as the Boeing 767 , Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 , which are used by several charter airlines for flights to Sri Lanka , Mexico , Thailand and Egypt .
There are six parking zones at the airport, named after the countries of the world: USA, Australia, Kenya, Spain, Egypt and Greenland. Three parking lots are located within walking distance from the airport, the other three are connected to the airport by bus. Near the airport there is also another parking zone, connected to the airport by two pedestrian bridges. There is also a 24-hour gas station operating on the principle of self-service.
