Arsenyev, Yakov Arsenyevich

Born in 1768 in the village of Bedarev, Lyubimsky District, Yaroslavl Province, in a priest’s family.

After graduating from the Kostroma Theological Seminary , he was defined there as a teacher and for 12 years taught Latin syntax, poetry, rhetoric and philosophy at the seminary. In addition, he taught students of the higher classes of the seminary the Hebrew language and held other positions in the seminary: for two years he was a librarian and for four years he was the prefect of the seminary.

On February 8, 1795, Arsenyev was ordained by the Bishop of Kostroma Pavel (Zernov), a priest (junior) in the Assumption Cathedral, and two years later, in 1797, leaving the service in the seminary, he was appointed the keynote of the cathedral.

On March 14, 1804, Jacob Arsenyev was elevated to the rank of archpriest of the cathedral, and from that day he ruled the cathedral church for 44 years.

Using the location and full confidence of local archpastors, Jacob Arsenyev also held various posts on diocesan administration: for 36 years he was the censor of sermons of all Kostroma city and many county priests, 26 years - a member of the spiritual consistory, 11 years (from 1812 to 1823) - a lawmaker in the Smolensk Cadet Corps, which was then in Kostroma, and, in addition, he performed many of the instructions of his superiors: as a deputy, exhorter, member of various committees established by the government, instructive astyrya in joining heterodox to the Orthodox Church, for the implementation of which has always received praise and gratitude.

In 1835, with the abolition of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Arsenyev was to give his place to the archpriest of the abolished cathedral, Daniel Gruzdev; but, due to the weakness of his strength and dedication of the last years, Arsenyev, in the rank of key-holder of the cathedral, continued to bear the duties of archpriest for five years. These five years, however, were ranked as Arsenyev’s Protopriest service. In 1840, after the death of Gruzdev, Arsenyev was again appointed archpriest of the Assumption, but already the cathedral, whose duties he carried until his death. Back in 1788, Arsenyev was counted among the nobility of the Kostroma province.

Arsenyev devoted his leisure time to composing sermons and translating moral theology from Latin into Russian. Two volumes of his sermons were approved by spiritual censorship and printed under the title: “Instructive words spoken in Kostroma Assumption Cathedral and other places of Kostroma Uspensky Cathedral by archpriest and knight Jacob Arsenyev, who were in Smolensk Cadet Corps, from 1813 to 1 st July 1824, the teacher of the law, with the application of some speeches ", M., 1828, and" Continuation of instructive words and speeches, "his own, M. 1837. His essay" moral theology, or Christian instruction, in which clear and firmly proven positions of Christians on, in public or civil, in a home or church state ”(translated from Latin, M. 1804), was approved by the Holy Synod and printed, according to its order, the second edition, and the translator was given 50 copies of his work as a reward . Arseniev also compiled the “Description of Kostroma Assumption Cathedral, established by the Imperial order in 1835 by the cathedral, compiled in 1829 by the archpriest of this cathedral and the knight Jacob Arseniev.” M. 1837 ("Description" this was printed first in the "Notes of the Fatherland" for 1819).
