Biography

E. Cole was born into a working class family in Kent in England . Received primary education. Early left an orphan. After his mother remarried, the boy fled to London . In 1850 he went to South Africa and settled in the Cape Colony . He was engaged in farming, conducted botanical research.

In November 1852 he moved to Australia to Victoria . He spent several months looking for work.

In 1865, he opened a bookstore next to one of Melbourne's markets. After a successful advertising campaign, his store became very popular. Over time, in 1883 he created a book passage in Melbourne, which turned into one of the largest book enterprises in Australia.

E. Cole became famous for his innovative approach to bookselling, which made him a very successful businessman. His book passages were famous for the largest stocks of books in the world. They were visited by a large number of readers. During their stay in Australia, they were visited by Rudyard Kipling and Mark Twain . The audience was invited to visit Cole’s shops and passages, to spend as much time as they wanted there, sorting through books without even reading them.

Despite the lack of education, E. Cole read a lot and even wrote a polemical book on biblical miracles, The Real Place in History of Jesus and Paul.

E. Cole organized a publishing house and began to publish books, almanacs. One of the most successful was the illustrated almanac " Cole's Funny Picture Book " (1879), which contains jokes, puzzles, useful tips, etc.

Cole has had great success in publishing gardening , floriculture and other agricultural literature, including Cole's Penny Garden Guide , Cole's Australasian Gardening and Domestic Floriculture (1897), Cole's The Happifying Gardening Hobby (1918), The Bouquet: Australian flower gardening , The Australian Floral Almanac et al.

E. Cole was known as an eccentric entrepreneur who, as they say, found his wife in 1875 by giving an advertisement in the front page of a city newspaper with a detailed listing of his many advantages, judging by the announcement.
