Compilation and general content

Since 1952, Mukoda Kuniko studied screenwriting under the leadership of Ichikawa Saburo and from the 60s began working as an independent screenwriter of television series. She created many hits, among which, for example, was the famous TV series “Time!” ( 時間 で す よ dzikan desu ё ) , and in the 70s she became the most popular television screenwriter. In 1975, she was hospitalized with breast cancer. Due to the fact that the cancer was detected at an early stage, Mukoda was successfully operated on and discharged the following year. However, it later turned out that during the operation during the blood transfusion she had hepatitis, and as a result of treatment, her right arm was temporarily taken away.

Just at that time, Mukode received an order for a series of essays from the journal Ginza Hyakuten ( Japanese 銀座 百 点 ) . Mukode wanted to try herself in a new quality and she accepted the order, deciding to write with her left hand. As a result, she created more than 20 essays, based mostly on her memories of childhood and family. Essays from this series were published for two years, from February 1976 to June 1978, in the Ginza Hyakuten magazine. Mukoda’s debut as an essayist was welcomed by readers, and soon after the publication of the magazine, a compilation of “Father’s Apologies” was published, which included essays from the series. This collection found a vivid reflection of the realities of the Japanese family of the Showa era [1] , and to this day it is considered the main essay collection of Mukoda Kuniko.

Notes

  1. ↑ However, according to the essayist Takajima Toshio, the Mukoda family was considered quite wealthy before the war, so the image of the “simple pre-war family”, as they say about her works in recent years, is misleading. The blame for this, he said, lies with the author who created such a myth, perhaps unknowingly. (“The Birth of a Tale - in Search of Mukoda Kuniko”, Isoppusya, 2000. ISBN 978-4900963139 )
