History
Early years
Already in 1903, an attempt was made in the city to create a football club, which failed, but two years later Mainzer Fussballclub Hassia 1905 was formed in Mainz. After several years, playing in the southern German league Süddeutschen Fußballverband, this club teamed up with another local football society, and became known as Mainzer Fussballverein Hassia 05 . In 1912, the word Hassia was removed from the name of the club. After World War I , the club merged again, this time with Sportverein 1908 Mainz , which as a result formed Mainzer Fußball- und Sportverein 05 , which became a further solid club. Mainzer Füssbal und Sportwein 05 won the regional championship between World War I and World War II , and ended up in the national championship qualifying round after winning the regional Chryslig.
The Third Reich Period
In the 1920-30s. the club showed good results in the Hesse division, including first place at the end of the seasons in the seasons 1931/32 and 1932/33. After the reorganization of football structures that took place in the country under the rule of National Socialists , the team made it to the Gauliga Southwest ( German: Gauliga Südwest ), then one of the six leading regional leagues of the Reich. The club spent only one season in this division, before “flying out”. In 1938, the authorities forcibly merged the club with another sports society - Reichsbann Mainz Germ. Reichsbahn SV Mainz , and until the end of World War II, the club performed under the name Reichsbahn SV Mainz 05 .
Long Road to the Bundesliga
After the war ended, the team again joined the top ranks of the Oberliga South-West division, but for a long time remained an “average”. After the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 , the club from Mainz spent the next 40 years playing in the second division. Three times, Mainz 05 was close to entering the Bundesliga in 1997, 2002, and 2003 , but failed each time until it made its way to it in 2004 under the guidance of a coach and former team player, Jürgen Klopp .
