History

The title of Earl of St. Germans was created in 1815 for the English politician John Eliot, 2nd Baron Eliot (1761-1823). He previously represented Liskeard in the House of Commons of Great Britain (1784-1800, 1801-1804). John and his brother William were the second and third sons of Edward Eliot (1727-1804), who represented Saint Germans (1748-1768, 1774-1775), Liskeard (1768-1774) and Cornwall (1775-1784) in the House of Commons. and also served as Commissioner of the Trade and Plantation Council . Edward Eliot was the son of Richard Eliot (1694–1748) and Harriet Kraggs, illegitimate daughter of James Kraggs the Younger (1686–1721) from actress Esther St. Flowlow (1690–1773). In 1784, the title of Baron Eliot from St. Germans in Cornwall County ( Great Britain ) was created for Edward Eliot. In 1789, he received royal permission for the additional surname “Kraggs”.

His second and eldest of the surviving sons, Edward James Eliot (1758-1797), died during his father's lifetime. In 1804, the aforementioned title was inherited by John Eliot, 2nd Baron Eliot (1761-1823), the third son of the 1st Baron Eliot, who in 1814 received the title of Count of St. Germans . His successor was the younger brother, William Eliot, 2nd Earl of St. Germans (1767-1845). He was a diplomat and politician, in particular, was the parliamentary deputy secretary of state for foreign affairs (1804-1805). His only son, Edward Grenville Eliot, 3rd Earl of St. Germans (1798–1877), was also an outstanding politician; he served as Secretary General for Ireland (1841–1845), General Postmaster (1845–1846), Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1853-1855) and Lord Steward Household (1857-1858, 1859-1866). His third son, William Eliot, 4th Earl of St. Germans (1829–1881), a British diplomat, was a member of the House of Commons from Devonport (1866–1868). In 1870, he began to sit in the House of Lords, having received the paternal title of Baron Eliot.

The 4th Earl of Saint Germans was not married, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Henry Cornwallis Eliot, the 5th Earl of Saint Germans (1835-1911). He worked at the Foreign Office for many years. His eldest son and successor, John Eliot, 6th Earl of St. Germans (1890–1922), participated in the First World War as captain of the 2nd Scottish Royal Dragoon Regiment and was awarded a military cross. He died without leaving his sons. His cousin, Grenville John Eliot, 7th Earl of St. Germans (1867-1942) became his successor. He was the eldest son of Colonel Charles George Cornwallis Eliot (1839-1901), the sixth son of the 3rd Earl of St. Germans. He was not married, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Montague Eliot, 8th Earl of St. Germans (1870-1960). He held a number of posts at the royal court, in particular, was the ceremonial master of kings Edward VII (1901-1906) and George V (1910-1936).

As of 2010 , the holder of the count title was his grandson, Peregrine Nicholas Eliot, 10th Earl of St. Germans (born 1941 ), who inherited his father in 1988 .

The title of count's name comes from the village of St. Germans in East Cornwall.
