Born in a professorial family.
He graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lyon with an aggregate degree.
In 1951 he defended a dissertation in gigantomakhii at the Sorbonne and received a doctorate.
Since 1952, professor at the Greek Faculty of Arts in Clermont-Ferrand , from 1962–68. his dean.
Since 1968, professor at the Faculty of Nanterre, University of Paris, since 1970 - University of Paris X - Nanterre , since 1986 - eméret .
One of the founders in 1967–70. first president of APLAES.
Corresponding Member of the British Academy (1980). Officer of the Legion of Honor, commander of the orders of Merit and the Academic Palms.
