History
The city rail system has existed in Valparaiso since the 19th century, but it was not a subway for several reasons, in particular because of the large intervals between trains. The construction of the current system was launched in 1999. The old system was closed on June 30, 2005 , and the metro was opened on November 23 of the same year.
Lines
The metro has 20 stations on a single line with a length of 43 km, extending outside the city of Valparaiso itself. Four stations are underground, the rest are open ground.
Rolling stock
On a single line there are 27 X'Trapolis trains manufactured by the French company Alstom .
Fare
Contactless cards are the only way to pay for Valparaiso metro. In September 2010, the cost of the card was 1,200 Chilean pesos ($ 2.4). Payment for the trip depends on its length and on the time of day, therefore maps are used both at the initial and final stations of the route. There are five zones along the route and three tariffs depending on the time of day, and the fare varies from 204 Chilean pesos for a trip to “Zone 1” during unloaded hours to 716 Chilean pesos for a trip through all five zones. Exit at the entrance station also leads to maximum fare. Children up to 1 meter tall ride for free.
There are travel benefits for students, seniors and people with disabilities.
