The commune is located approximately [2] 440 km west of Paris , 125 km west of Rennes , 45 km west of Bath .

In 2010, among 9,726 people of working age (15–64 years old), 7,029 were active, 2,697 were inactive (the activity indicator was 72.3%, in 1999 it was 69.0%). Out of 7029 active residents, 6122 (3300 men and 2822 women) worked, 907 (404 men and 503 women) were unemployed. Among 2697 inactive 840 people were pupils or students, 1070 - pensioners, 787 were inactive for other reasons [5] .
